The Wire broke new moulds and gave birth to the ‘must-watch’ TV genre. 12 years after it finished, this sweeping look at the city of Baltimore is still consistently cited by critics as one of the greatest TV series ever made.

Girls
Lena Dunham’s fearless comedy tackles female friendship through the eyes of four 20-somethings as they attempt to navigate the unpredictable waters of adulthood in New York. Praised for its sexually frank, wryly satirical look at millennial angst, it helped usher in an impressive new generation of idiosyncratic voices on television.
Big Little Lies
The smash-hit, two-season series, Big Little Lies, featuring the incredible ensemble cast of Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley and Zoe Kravitz, is based on Liane Moriarty’s bestselling book of the same name. The darkly comedic series tells the tale of three mothers whose seemingly perfect lives unravel to the point of murder.
True Detective
Described as the perfect blend of film and television, this star-studded anthology series follows US Police officers and detectives who are forced to face dark secrets about themselves while investigating complex homicides. Big name stars include Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, Mahershala Ali and Stephen Dorff.

Lovecraft Country
Adapted from Matt Ruff’s novel, the recently launched thriller action-adventure is receiving rave reviews in the US and Australia. A road trip across 1950s America turns into a struggle to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and terrifying creatures.
Watchmen
Starring Regina King, Jeremy Irons and Don Johnson, the superhero hit led the recent Emmy Award nominations with a massive 26 nods. Watchmen embraces the nostalgia of the original ground-breaking graphic novel of the same name while breaking new ground of its own.
Succession
“Succession is still the best thing on television” – The Independent. Quickly becoming the must-watch drama, Succession reaped a whopping 18 nominations for this year’s Emmy Awards. The series follows the dysfunctional Roy family who control a media conglomerate.
Chernobyl
This critically acclaimed five-part miniseries dramatises the true story of the 1986 nuclear accident. It quickly became the series everyone was talking about, and after just three episodes topped IMDB’s list of the greatest 250 TV shows of all time
