HBO confirms Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn in lead roles.

HBO today confirmed the first specifics about season two of drama series True Detective, including the casting of Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn in lead roles.

True Detective season two will premiere only on Foxtel’s showcase channel Express from the US in January 2015.

Filming will commence soon in California, with series creator Nic Pizzolatto to again write all eight episodes for the new season. While Justin Lin (“Fast and Furious”) is on board to direct the first two episodes.

The second season story revolves around three cops and a career criminal who navigate a web of conspiracy after a murder.

Colin Farrell plays Ray Velcoro, a compromised detective whose allegiances are torn between his masters in a corrupt police department and the mobster who owns him.

Vince Vaughn plays Frank Semyon, a man in danger of losing his criminal empire when his move into legitimate enterprise is upended by the murder of a business partner.

Additional cast members are still to be announced, including the role of a female police officer.

The excitement surrounding the planning for the second instalment of True Detective has reached feverish levels mainly due to the success of the first series, which was buoyed by the star power of Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, and set the bar high for season two.

True Detective season two will screen January, 2015 on showcase Express from the US.
