Foxtel the big winner following the 68th Primetime Emmy Awards
HBO’s worldwide phenomenon Game of Thrones exclusive to Foxtel has made Emmy Awards’ history by securing a total of 38 wins since its series launch becoming the only scripted series to ever have won this many Emmy Awards. This count includes Game of Thrones securing Best Drama for the second consecutive year, Best Writing in a Drama series, Best Directing in a Drama Series, as well as picking up nine wins at the 2016 Creative Arts Emmy Awards held last week.
Season 6 of HBO’s Game of Thrones shattered viewership records on Foxtel with the full season enjoying a cumulative average audience of more than 1.2 million viewers per episode – the most watched scripted series on Foxtel ever.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus from HBO’s comedy series Veep on Foxtel holds the record for most Emmys won by a female performer, which has now risen to seven Emmy Awards as she won for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for the fifth time in a row for her role in Veep. HBO’s comedy smash also won Outstanding Comedy Series for the second consecutive year.
Last Week Tonight With John Oliver – exclusive to Foxtel from HBO – won the Outstanding Variety Talk Series Emmy Award, a category previously dominated by another Foxtel series The Daily Show, where Oliver cut his teeth before hosting his own HBO talk show.
These record-breaking wins are an accomplishment for HBO and a testament to its quality productions and popularity with television viewers. Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, from The Comedy Channel’s Jimmy Kimmel Live, the Emmy Awards celebrate excellence in television programming. Foxtel also secured – in addition to the above – a raft of wins including the showcase channel’s Ray Donovan, The Americans and Rami Malek winning best actor in a drama for Mr Robot. The Comedy Channel wins included Louis Anderson for Baskets, in which he played a version of his mother, Kate McKinnon for Saturday Night Live, and comedy sketch show Key & Peele, along with BBC First’s The Night Manager taking a win for Best Director.
