In a nail-biting finish, 5 Seconds of Summer, the hottest band on the planet right now has pipped 49 other bands at the post to become the 2014 [V] OZ ARTIST OF THE YEAR as announced on THE RIFF LIVE show today on Channel [V].

Spurred on by support from their many fans, 5 Seconds of Summer have beaten the odds and the other finalists – metalcore outfit The Amity Affliction and multi-talented Troye Sivan – to hold the championship title of [V] OZ ARTIST 2014 for a second year in a row.

Rebecca Batties, Foxtel General Manager for Music and Head of Digital, said “The [V] OZ ARTIST OF THE YEAR competition is Australia’s longest running publicly voted music award continuing for the past 17 years. Past winners have included Australian music royalty Silverchair, The Veronicas, Delta Goodrem, Guy Sebastian, and many more. This year, almost one million votes came through Channel [V] online to choose the winner and we’re thrilled it’s once again hit-makers 5 Seconds of Summer.”

5 Seconds of Summer – made up of Sydney-siders Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford, Calum Hood and Ashton Irwin – launched onto the music scene in 2012. The group has been making some serious noise locally and internationally with their hit ‘She Looks So Perfect’ single charting No.1 in the UK and US, in addition to their debut album 5 Seconds of Summer reaching No.1 in Australia and in 12 other countries.

Alongside the [V] OZ ARTIST OF THE YEAR announcement, the $10,000 major cash prize winner was also revealed on THE RIFF LIVE today. The major prize has been awarded to one lucky winner simply by casting their vote online at vmusic.com.au.

Channel [V] is synonymous with amplifying home-grown Aussie musical talent and since 1997 [V] OZ ARTIST OF THE YEAR has recognised 50 of the most loved and played Australian artists of each year. Notable past Award recipients include 5SOS themselves as well as Seth Sentry, 360 and Silverchair, with Channel [V] spring-boarding these artists to the front of the pack both in Australia and overseas.
